South Dakota Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

South Dakota Board of Nursing (CNP licensure is joint under SDCL 36-9A with the Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners)

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial); CNP license expiration is tied to the SD RN license renewal period (ARSD 20:62:02:05)

Total CE hours

None beyond national certification. ARSD 20:62:02:06 requires biennial renewal with (1) an unencumbered SD RN license/privilege and (2) evidence of current national certification in the role/population focus. No CE contact-hour requirement exists for CNP renewal (and South Dakota also has no CE requirement for RN renewal).

Pharmacology CE

None. No state pharmacology-specific CE requirement; the state defers entirely to maintenance of national certification (e.g., ANCC PMHNP-BC recertification, which itself includes pharmacotherapeutics requirements, but that is the certifier's rule, not South Dakota's).

Controlled-substance CE

None state-mandated for renewal. South Dakota has no state opioid/controlled-substance CE requirement for APRN license renewal. (Federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training still applies to DEA registrants.)

Good to know

Verified directly from ARSD 20:62:02:05 and 20:62:02:06 (SD Legislature official rules text). CNPs licensed before June 26, 1996 are exempt from the certification-evidence requirement. The 1,040 practice-hours rule sometimes cited for SD relates to removing the collaborative-agreement requirement (full practice authority), not to renewal CE. SD is an NLC compact state for the RN license underlying the CNP license.

Cover your South Dakota requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.
