Indiana Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Indiana State Board of Nursing, Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA)

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial); RN/APRN licenses expire October 31 of odd-numbered years

Total CE hours

No CE required for the RN license or for APRN licensure without prescriptive authority. APRNs WITH prescriptive authority: 30 actual contact hours of CE during the 2 years preceding renewal, from a nationally approved sponsor of nursing CE (848 IAC 5-1-3).

Pharmacology CE

8 actual contact hours of pharmacology within the 30 hours, per renewal cycle — required for renewal of prescriptive authority (848 IAC 5-1-3).

Controlled-substance CE

None currently. The former 2-hour opioid prescribing/opioid abuse CE requirement for Indiana Controlled Substance Registration (IC 35-48-3-3.5) expired July 1, 2025; CSR applicants and renewals after that date no longer need it (confirmed on the Indiana PLA Controlled Substance Registration page). Renewal of prescriptive authority still requires a current collaborative practice agreement. Federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training applies separately to DEA registrants.

Good to know

Split structure: CE is entirely tied to prescriptive authority ('legend drug' authority), not the base license — an APRN without prescriptive authority has no state CE requirement. CE certificates are not uploaded at renewal but random audits target APRNs with prescriptive authority. 30/8 figure confirmed in the codified rule text (848 IAC 5-1-3); the 2-hour opioid CSR requirement is confirmed on Indiana PLA CE pages and statute reference.

Cover your Indiana requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.
