Mississippi Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Mississippi Board of Nursing

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial; APRN certificate renews with the RN license September-December of even-numbered years; certification period runs Jan 1 of odd year through Dec 31 of even year)

Total CE hours

40 contact hours of CE related to the area of practice per 2-year period is the historical rule, but per the Board's current APRN page, achievement/maintenance/renewal of national certification in the designated practice area satisfies the general CE requirement — so a certified PMHNP maintaining ANCC certification meets it.

Pharmacology CE

No standalone pharmacology hour quota beyond the controlled-substance requirement below. A separate graduate pharmacology course is an educational prerequisite for controlled-substance prescriptive authority, not a renewal CE requirement. (Older rules required 2 hours in pharmacology of controlled substances for prescribers; this has been superseded/absorbed by the current 5-hour controlled-substance mandate.)

Controlled-substance CE

A minimum of 5 contact hours of CE directly related to controlled substances per state certification period, required of ALL APRNs regardless of whether they hold controlled-substance prescriptive authority (certificates uploaded as PDFs at renewal). New APRN graduates within the past two years are exempt for their first renewal only. Federal 8-hour DEA MATE training additionally applies to DEA registrants.

Good to know

Numbers for the 5-hour controlled-substance requirement and the national-certification-satisfies-CE provision were read directly from the official msbn.ms.gov APRN page. The 40-hour figure appears in the Board's administrative code and vendor summaries but is effectively met via national certification; flagging it because some sources present 40 hours as an independent quota. The 5-hour CS requirement is the notable Mississippi-specific burden for PMHNPs.

Official sources

Cover your Mississippi requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.
