Michigan Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Michigan Board of Nursing (Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, LARA)

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial)

Total CE hours

25 hours per 2-year cycle for the underlying RN license (R 338.10601); the NP specialty certification carries no separate hour quota. Per R 338.10602(2)(c), obtaining or maintaining national NP specialty certification may be credited for the full 25 hours (including the 2 pain-management hours).

Pharmacology CE

none — Michigan has no pharmacology-specific CE hour requirement for NP renewal. Verified against R 338.10601 and R 338.10602 (Michigan Board of Nursing General Rules); pharmacology is merely listed as acceptable content within the pain-management CE topic.

Controlled-substance CE

At least 2 of the 25 hours must be in pain and pain symptom management each renewal period (R 338.10601). One-time opioids/controlled-substances awareness training is required for Michigan controlled substance licensees. Implicit bias training: 1 hour per year of the license cycle (2 hours per biennial renewal, R 338.7004). One-time human trafficking training also required. Federal 8-hour DEA MATE training for DEA registrants.

Good to know

Some CE-vendor sites claim '30 hours including 15 pharmacology' for Michigan NPs — this is NOT in the Michigan administrative rules and appears to be an error (possibly confusing initial specialty-certification qualifications). Rule text read via Cornell LII mirror of the official Admin Code (LARA's own PDF endpoints block automated access). In practice a certified PMHNP who maintains ANCC certification satisfies the entire 25-hour requirement, but must still complete implicit bias training separately.

Cover your Michigan requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.
