Minnesota Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Minnesota Board of Nursing

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial; RN and APRN registrations renew by the last day of the licensee's birth month)

Total CE hours

24 contact hours per 24-month registration period for the RN license; for APRNs, current national certification on file with the Board satisfies this requirement in full. APRN licensure itself requires continuous maintenance of national certification (Minn. Stat. 148.211) rather than a state hour quota.

Pharmacology CE

none — Minnesota has no pharmacology-specific CE hour requirement for APRN renewal; national certification maintenance covers CE.

Controlled-substance CE

The Minnesota opioid-prescriber CE mandate (Minn. Stat. 214.12 subd. 6: 2 hours on best practices in prescribing opioids/controlled substances and non-pharmacological alternatives for pain) was a ONE-TIME requirement for the Jan 1, 2020 - Dec 31, 2022 window and the subdivision has expired (confirmed as expired on the Revisor's current statute text) — it is no longer an ongoing renewal requirement. Federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training applies to DEA registrants.

Good to know

Many CE-vendor pages still list the 2-hour opioid CE as current for Minnesota APRNs with prescriptive authority; the authorizing statute subdivision has expired per the official Revisor of Statutes site, so treat vendor claims of an ongoing requirement as stale. The mn.gov Board of Nursing site blocks automated access (bot shield), so renewal mechanics were cross-checked via statute text plus the Board's Opioid CE FAQ PDF.

Cover your Minnesota requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.
