Arizona Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN)

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

4 years — the APRN certificate expires when the RN license expires (RN licenses renew every 4 years) or when national certification expires, whichever occurs first (A.A.C. R4-19-506).

Total CE hours

None (no fixed CE hour requirement). Arizona uses a continued-competency model: renewal requires current national certification in role/population focus plus a practice requirement of at least 960 hours of APRN practice in the preceding 5 years (A.A.C. R4-19-506). Arizona defers routine CE to the national certifying body.

Pharmacology CE

None per renewal if the 960-hour practice requirement and national certification are maintained. If the practice requirement is NOT met, the APRN must complete 45 contact hours of advanced pharmacology plus 45 contact hours related to the role/population focus (plus precepted clinical hours of 300-1000 depending on time out of practice) (A.A.C. R4-19-506). Initial prescribing authority requires 45 contact hours of pharmacology/clinical management of drug therapy within the preceding 3 years (A.A.C. R4-19-511).

Controlled-substance CE

APRNs who hold an active DEA registration must complete a minimum of 3 hours of opioid-related, substance use disorder-related, or addiction-related CE each license renewal cycle (A.R.S. 32-3248.02, applies to all Arizona prescribers with DEA registration; counts toward other CE obligations).

Good to know

Opioid CE statute verified directly on azleg.gov; renewal rule verified via Cornell LII mirror of the Arizona Administrative Code (azbn.gov and azsos.gov blocked automated fetches). Arizona is an NLC compact state for RN licensure; APRN certificate is Arizona-specific. For a practicing PMHNP the practical burden is: keep ANCC certification current, log 960+ practice hours/5 years, and (if DEA-registered) 3 hours opioid/SUD CE per 4-year renewal cycle.

Cover your Arizona requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.
