Kansas Nurse Practitioner CE Requirements

Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN)

Last reviewed July 2026 · verify current rules with the board before relying on them

Renewal cycle

2 years (biennial; APRN license renews on the same biennial cycle as the RN license, expiring the last day of the licensee's birth month in odd/even years per birth year)

Total CE hours

30 contact hours of approved CNE per biennial renewal, and ALL 30 must be related to the advanced practice registered nurse role (general RN-level CE does not count) — K.A.R. 60-11-113(b). The 30 APRN hours also satisfy the underlying RN license renewal (60-11-113(h)). Exempt if renewing within 30 months of initial licensure by exam or within 9 months of reinstatement/endorsement.

Pharmacology CE

None. The 2022 permanent regulations (K.A.R. 60-11-113, published Kansas Register Vol. 41 Issue 39) require 30 APRN-role CNE hours with no pharmacology-specific carve-out for renewal; pharmacology coursework is required only for initial APRN licensure/education (K.A.R. 60-11-103). Some CE vendors claim a 15-hour pharmacotherapeutics requirement, but this does not appear in the current regulation for renewal.

Controlled-substance CE

No Kansas state-mandated controlled-substance/opioid CE for APRN license renewal. Only the federal one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training applies for DEA registrants.

Good to know

Regulation text verified directly in the official Kansas Register (K.A.R. 60-11-113). Kansas is a full-practice-authority state since 2022 (no physician protocol required); the regulatory overhaul did not add renewal pharmacology CE. Excess hours do not carry over. Kansas is an NLC compact state for RN, but the APRN license is Kansas-specific.

Cover your Kansas requirements with 115 contact hours of practical psychopharmacology — including 75+ pharmacology contact hours. 1 CME = 1 contact hour, fully AANP-approved.

This guide is informational and not legal or licensing advice. National certification (e.g. ANCC PMHNP-BC: 75 CE hours per 5 years including 25 pharmacotherapeutics hours) and the one-time 8-hour DEA MATE Act training may apply in addition to state requirements.
